Using SignMyWord

SignMyWord is a fingerspelling reference tool. It is not a full sign-language translation service and should not be treated as professional interpreting or translation advice.

Accuracy

We aim to present fingerspelling clearly, but SignMyWord is provided as a practical reference and may contain errors or unavailable images. Users should check important or specialist content with an appropriate sign-language professional.

Images and third-party content

SignMyWord stores local copies of some fingerspelling artwork for speed and reliability and may fall back to Wikimedia Commons when a local file is unavailable. Individual source files keep their own licence and attribution requirements. SignMyWord does not claim ownership of third-party artwork.

BSL alphabet artwork: derived from files such as BSL letter A.svg by Coloringbuddymike, via Wikimedia Commons, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. SignMyWord may resize or crop the artwork for presentation; the underlying BSL artwork remains subject to that licence.

ASL alphabet artwork: files such as Sign language A.svg by wpclipart.com, via Wikimedia Commons. The checked alphabet artwork is released into the public domain. Each letter links to its Wikimedia source page so its file-specific information can be checked.

Share-card icons: selected transparent PNG icons are from Twemoji by Twitter/X contributors, used under the CC BY 4.0 licence.

Sharing, classroom sheets and embeds

You may use SignMyWord links, generated share images, classroom worksheets and the SignMyWord embed for personal, educational and ordinary sharing purposes, subject to any applicable third-party image licence requirements.

Search popularity and recent-search data

SignMyWord stores recent searches and basic anonymous usage counts in your browser so features such as recent searches and local popularity can work. This browser data is not linked to a SignMyWord account.

If the optional shared-trending service is enabled, SignMyWord sends only the cleaned word or phrase, the selected BSL/ASL alphabet and an aggregate count request. The public trending list is designed not to show one-off searches. No names, account details or IP addresses are intentionally stored in the trend records.

Availability

The service may change, be updated or become temporarily unavailable. Features and supported fingerspelling alphabets may also change over time.

Use of SignMyWord is at your own discretion. To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided without guarantees about uninterrupted availability or suitability for a particular purpose.
